Bicycle tour Koh Samet/Samed, Thailand, from Laos and Cambodia
If you’re on your way back towards Bangkok from Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam and find yourself along the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand, take a look at Koh Samet.
The word ‘Koh’ means ‘island’ in Thai, which tells you that this small, 6.8 km long island is a little paradise just off the mainland in Rayong province.
Allow yourself 2-3 days to check into one of the many hotels on the island and relax. You can find accommodation from $5 to 5 stars, so just cruise around and see which one looks the best for you.
Since it’s such a small island, it won’t be hard to take your time and scout the area first.
- Koh Samet is one of the driest archipelagos in Thailand, receiving less rain than other islands, and where the rainy season is a short May – July. Even though it’s only a few kilometers offshore, it’s unique climate make it an interesting destination with lots of bays to explore, each with their own hotels and restaurants.
As you can see from the map, the popular area of the island is along the east coast and at Sai Kaew beach, just to the south of Na Dan Pier.
There’s nightlife and parties happening on the weekends, with a great selection of restaurants and hotels right on the beach.
This island has become a popular weekend spot for vacationing Bangkok residents, so we recommend being there during the week when the island is much more quiet and relaxing.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy from your hotel. Canoe rental, diving, snorkeling and boat trips to name a few. Of course you can always just take a cruise around the island on your bicycle!
Getting back to Bangkok from Koh Samet is not a great ride for bicycles. The ‘Sukhumvit’ highway that links the two areas is a major 2-3 lane, busy highway.
There aren’t many opportunities to take smaller roads either.
Don’t worry though, there are plenty of ways to get back to BKK airport; boats, busses, mini vans, taxis or even the train. Since the island is a popular spot for locals from Bangkok, there’s always some form of public transport that can get you where you need to go.
